British Sugar – Bury St. Edmunds
As part of a broader decarbonisation and installation project, our team was recently engaged to refurbish and protect the existing structural steelwork at British Sugar in Bury St. Edmunds. The works included grit blasting to remove existing coatings and surface contaminants, followed by the application of a protective primer and an intumescent topcoat in British Sugar’s plant room – as well as renovating the former boiler house.

Coated steelwork in the facility
The intumescent coating system provides vital fire protection, expanding under high temperatures to insulate the steel and maintain its load-bearing capacity in the event of a fire. This not only ensures fire safety compliance but also enhances the longevity and resilience of the steel structure – supporting the project’s sustainability and decarbonisation goals.

Exposed pipework
The facility itself features a highly technical environment with extensive exposed pipework and existing infrastructure. Our team carefully coordinated works to maintain access, ensuring a high-quality finish while preserving the surrounding services.
Despite the large scale of the development and a tight delivery schedule, our team successfully completed the works to specification, meeting both programme and safety targets. The result is a durable, compliant, and high-quality finish that supports the client’s transition toward a more energy-efficient, sustainable operation.
