NEBULOUS WATER SPRAY CLEANING IS A GENTLER TECHNIQUE AND THE PREFERRED METHOD FOR CLEANING DELICATE MASONRY AND STONEWORK
There is a range of different cleaning methods available, wet and dry, chemical and water-based, abrasive and nonabrasive, many of which have a place in conservation. However when working on delicate stonework or masonry, many cleaning methods often prove to be far too abrasive or aggressive.
The nebulous spray method creates a micro-fine mist of water that gently cleans sensitive stone surfaces, removing grime, pollutants and many other types of water-soluble particulates.
Nebulous spraying, also known as intermittent mist spraying, is one of the gentlest methods of stone cleaning. Encrustations and dirt are softened progressively using low-pressure water washing, applying the minimum amount of water for the shortest duration to gradually soften the dirt.
Articulated nozzles ensure that the mist is directed exactly where it is needed with minimal impact and a more even coverage. Programmable time controllers can be set to open a valve for a given period and flow meters are available to measure the quantity of water delivered and to calculate the output. The length and frequency of spray is determined by the nature and condition of the material being treated.
After the process has started, frequent monitoring of the surfaces ensures that the right levels of clean are achieved and the risk of over cleaning is reduced. Once softened, the dirt can be removed by scrubbing or other relatively gentle techniques carried out by a trained VariBlast operative.
THE CONTROLLED PROCESS KEEPS WATER USE TO A MINIMUM
A further advantage of nebulous spraying is the ability to control the quantity of water used. As it uses less water, a more even wash is achieved and the probability of saturation is reduced because the stone does not get so wet. Because it is so gentle, the risk of washing away weak pointing material or decaying stone is also greatly reduced.
