Revamping Norwich Castle
VariBlast were proud to contribute to the renovation of Norwich Castle, restoring the building’s round columns alongside the distinctive Norman architecture.
After five years of closure, the Norman palace – originally commissioned by William the Conqueror and completed by his son Henry I in 1121 – reopened to the public last week. We were delighted to have restored the old round columns within the Castle as part of the renovation process. For the first time in 900 years, all 5 floors of the castle will be accessible to the public, comprising of battlements and basements whilst offering great views over Norwich.
Our team worked with precision and care: stripping the columns with peel-away chemical strip and coated these new steels with intumescant paint for 60 minutes. By using traditional hand-painting techniques alongside modern materials, we were able to protect the structural elements whilst providing a refreshed finish for many years to come. Every step of the process was carried out with sensitivity to the Castle’s heritage, ensuring that the result looks exceptional.
